Gradient Banding Test
Banding appears when tonal steps are too large for the signal or display — often due to 8-bit output, poor dithering, compression or incorrect gamma. This test shows smooth gradients (black→white and R/G/B ramps) plus near-black/near-white patches so you can verify shadow and highlight detail. For accuracy, disable vivid, dynamic contrast and heavy sharpening while testing.
Tip: If the darkest block merges into black, raise brightness or switch to sRGB; if the brightest block clips, reduce contrast slightly.
- Click Start Test and enter fullscreen.
- View grayscale and RGB ramps; look for visible steps or patches.
- Confirm near-black and near-white detail isn’t crushed or clipped.
- If banding persists, try 10-bit output and reduce processing.

Why do I see bands?
Typical causes are 8-bit output, weak dithering, aggressive sharpening, heavy compression, or incorrect gamma. Use 10-bit where possible and reduce processing.
Will HDR reduce banding?
It can, if the full pipeline (GPU → cable → display) supports HDR correctly. Poor tone-mapping may introduce other artefacts.
Is 8-bit+FRC better than basic 8-bit?
Usually, yes. Temporal dithering (FRC) helps smooth gradients compared with undithered 8-bit panels.
