Contrast & Gamma Test

Use alternating black/white bars and a grayscale ramp to confirm you can see detail just above black and just below white. If the darkest bars merge, your brightness or gamma is too low; if highlights clip, contrast or tone mapping is too aggressive. For HDR, tune in SDR first, then enable HDR and recheck.

  1. Click Start Test and enter fullscreen.
  2. From a normal viewing distance, look for crushed blacks or clipped whites.
  3. Adjust brightness/contrast (and gamma only if needed), then compare again.

Contrast & Gamma — FAQ

What should I be able to see?

The first few dark bars above black and the last few light bars below white should be distinct, with a smooth neutral grayscale ramp.

Do I need to change gamma?

Usually brightness and contrast are enough. Adjust gamma only if shadows remain crushed or highlights still clip after basic tuning.
