Backlight Bleed Test

Backlight bleed appears as bright patches or streaks along the edges of LCD panels when showing pure black. IPS glow is a separate, angle-dependent grey haze that increases off-axis. Use this tool at normal brightness in a dark room. A little even glow is typical; pronounced, asymmetric patches are more concerning.

Tip: Disable local dimming/eco modes while testing to avoid brightness shifts, and minimise reflections behind you.

  1. Dim the lights and set brightness to your usual level.
  2. Click Start Test to display a deep black screen.
  3. Check centre vs off-axis; note bright corners or edges.
  4. Optionally take a fixed-exposure photo for comparison.

Backlight Bleed — FAQ

Is some backlight bleed normal?

Minor, even glow is common on many edge-lit LCDs. Large, bright or asymmetric patches are more concerning and may qualify as defects depending on brand policy.

How do I reduce IPS glow while testing?

Lower brightness, sit centred and straight-on, and avoid off-axis angles. Reduce room reflections. IPS glow varies with angle and isn’t strictly a defect.

Should I disable local dimming or eco modes?

Yes. These features can mask or exaggerate bleed by changing luminance. Turn them off during the test for consistent results.
